Under the Stars: Drive-in to the perfect COVID date night

Drive-in to the perfect COVID date night

Watching a movie outside at a drive-in theater is the perfect fun date choice when you are social distancing together from the rest of the world but still want to DO things out in the world. Here are some helpful hints for making the most of your date with the silver screen:

Tips

  • Many drive-in theaters offer two movies for the price of one, so if you feel like staying for the second feature, you may be looking at a late night out. Check your theater’s listings ahead of time to plan the combo that is most interesting for you and your date.

  • Check to see if your theater accepts credit cards—you may need to have cash on-hand.

  • You can bring your own snacks! Although many drive-in theaters offer concession stand snacks, we think it’s fun (and cheaper!) to pack your own favorite smorgasbord of treats.

  • If you have a van with a rear door or car with a wide area that opens in the back, you can bring sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows to get comfy. If you are driving a truck, you can go one step further and use beanbags, love seats, or make a huge love-nest of cushions! And there’s always the option of bringing lawn chairs.

  • You will probably be able to use your car stereo through both movies without it draining the battery, but you might want to turn the car on in between features to recharge it a bit. We recommend packing jumper cables or a portable battery charger just in case.

  • The weekends are the busiest nights for drive-in movies, so if you go then, you might want to go quite a bit early (bring a take-out meal or some games to play while you wait!) or consider going on a weeknight if your theater offers them.

  • Wear your cutest pajamas! Even if you don’t stay for the late feature, you’ll be nice and cozy.

And don't forget to spend a little time stargazing with your date, because dating, even in COVID, is all about enjoying these little moments together. So have fun and stay safe!
